Title: | Stamped Amphora Handle: Rhodian
Category: | SS Rhodian | |
Description: | Angle fragment. Clay rather pale. Chipping at edge of inner break of fragment has removed a little of the circumference of the impression, which is otherwise quite fresh. Most of the area is occupied by the central device; a chariot with four rearing horses driven by Helios, in long chiton and blown-back himation, with radiate head full face (? features not distinct). With one hand he grasps the reins (a curved line disappearing above behind the head of the nearest horse, below behind its shoulder); with the other he reaches forward a rod like an orchestral conductor's baton. The chariot is rather schematic the four-spoked whell being prominent, acurved rail rather indefinite, (worn? not drawn across the figure). The heads and shoulders of the horses are much elongated in height, and somewhat blurred; possibly the die was partly renovated or possibly it slipped in setting. The quadriga is surrounded by a beaded circle, outside which may be read. Cf. Johnson's Lysippos on evidence for the reconstruction of the "Chariot of the Sun for the Rhodians" ascribed by Pliny to Lysippos. He refers to an article by Maiuri in Aer I (1920), p. 133, which publishes four seals similar to ours but inscribed only with a month name (under the horse's feet in an upcurving line; cf. SS 1222; Mauiri dates them by style at the beginning of the 3rd century B.C. or earlier.
Notes: | Rdg: cen device a chariot w/ 4 rearing horses driven by Helios, in long chiton and blown-back himation, w/ radiate head full- face; one hand grasps reins (curved line disappearing abv, behind horse's head, below behind it's shldr); the other he reaches forward a rod. The chariot is rather schematic, 4-spoked wheel prominent, curved rail rather indefinite. Heads and shldrs of horses elongated in height, blurred, poss die was partly renovated of slipped* Par: see Johnson's, Lysippos on evidence for the reconstruction of the "Chariot of the Sun for the Rhs", ascribed by Pliny to Lysippos. In Maiuri 1920 p133, there are 4 seals sim to this one published, but inscribed only w/ a mon name (under horses' feet upcurving - see SS 01222); Maiuri dates them by style at the beginning of 3c BC, or earlier. SS 01183 is closely sim to Maiuri's quadriga, but cf the relation of wheels to floor (?) of chariot, and the rein arm is definitely diff; prob made a new (?) one (VG)* Msc: Johnson saw the seal yesterday, he does not take this material as much evidence, doubts if the stp composition was inspired by the Lusippos composition (VG, 7.ii.33)* ΛΣΤ-Μ/*
