Stratum: | Trench S IV | |
Notes: | S IV 0.95-1.25. Mycenaean chiefly some local Mattmalerei. At least 1 Minyan sherd. [MN: 1 plain Myc. cup practically complete] [Nakassis: CP 131] We have found a well built wall ca. 1.20 deep. In order not to injure it we are widening trench S to north and plan to go down north of this wall. We have therefore a second set of baskets for S I and S II [This pottery appears to be from both NB 81 B 82 and NB 81 B 92] [p. 369] S IV 0.95-1.25 (2 trays) Mycenaean LM III painted 13 sherds [MN: LM III 7, LM II 3 or 4 (?)] Solid black (poor) 9 sherds " red (fairly good) 7 " Unpainted buff red buff and yellow green 40 sherds [MN: 1 cup unpainted buff almost complete. Shape of plain gold cups from Mycenae] [Nakassis: CP 131] Coarseware 29 sherds Polished black (handmade) 2 sherds Brown with cuneiform incisions 1 sherd [p. 370] Minyan 10 sherds chiefly black. One has incised lines. Mattmalerei fairly numerous (a) black on green or yellow green 12 sherds incl. 1 with part of broad handle. Decor. is linear geometric. Lines usually pretty broad. Sherds are almost all fairly coarse. [MN: handmade 2 now black due to fire?] (b) black on buff or red buff. 14 sherds incl. 1 handle (ribbed) 1 piece is thin fabric others mostly coarse (c) purple-black on buff or green-buff 9 sherds linear geometric. rather coarse. 3 of the sherds are polished. (d) Brown on buff cross in circle. polished may not be Mattmalerei 1 sherd (e) Dull red on terracotta 1 sherd [MN: 37 sherds] Urfirnis (a) Decor. geometric type 2 sherds incl. part of rim of small jug. Rather finer fabric than the Mattmalerei. These 2 might however be Mattmalerei? (b) Cream on black Urfirnis 1 sherd cf. Chaeronea style (Agia Marina) approximately [MN: Mattmalerei 2nd style I think] (c) Cream on lustrous red (what?) Mycenaean sherd red biscuit curious design [sketch of sherd] [James-Nakassis: everything from crossed-out (c) to sketch circled] Tzonou-Herbst=Circle indicates that the sherd was originally thought to be Urfirnis but it is actually Mycenaean. Red on buff lustrous handmade (?) 1 burnt sherd now looks red on dark gray (Myc?) [NB 84 p. iii] S IV LM III 7 LM II 4 Red 7 Black 9 Buff 40 Minyan 10 Matt 37 | |
