Stratum: | Trench S IV, south extension
Notes: | We have struck so many walls and stones that it becomes impossible for us to proceed deeper without destroying something. So I am stopping here and extending E end of S to south hoping for a better chance to go deep here. There are new lots of S I, S II, S III, S IV from this new section. [p. 240, 15 June 1916] In trench S at depth of 1.25 we have struck 2 walls with a hearth between them. Looks like this: The hearth is roughly circular. [sketch of top plan showing three walls and a hearth with measurements] This hearth is made of stones, broken sherds, etc. set in clay above pebbles and covered with clay. Baked hard by fire on top. I am getting a photograph of it and will then take it out. In level it belongs to bottom of S IV = 1.25 deep. Film of 1915 exp. (1) hearth from N showing S wall [Bookidis: Neg. 1985-166-19] Exp. (2) hearth from south showing N wall [Bookidis: Poss. = neg. 1985-166-10] [James-Nakassis: The elevations for the south extension are taken from those of the main section of trench S (so we are assuming that he is digging the same levels). Note that this assumption is corroborated by the fact that the bottom of S IV south extension is 1.25 m below ground level, as is the bottom of S IV in the main section (see B80).] [This pottery appears to be from both NB 81 B 82 and NB 81 B 92] [p. 369] S IV 0.95-1.25 (2 trays) Mycenaean LM III painted 13 sherds [MN: LM III 7, LM II 3 or 4 (?)] Solid black (poor) 9 sherds " red (fairly good) 7 " Unpainted buff red buff and yellow green 40 sherds [MN: 1 cup unpainted buff almost complete. Rather finer fabric than the Mattmalerei. These 2 might however be Mattmalerei? (b) Cream on black Urfirnis 1 sherd cf. Chaeronea style (Agia Marina) approximately [MN: Mattmalerei 2nd style I think] (c) Cream on lustrous red (what?) Mycenaean sherd red biscuit curious design [sketch of sherd] [James-Nakassis: everything from crossed-out (c) to sketch circled] Tzonou-Herbst=Circle indicates that the sherd was originally thought to be Urfirnis but it is actually Mycenaean. Red on buff lustrous handmade (?) 1 burnt sherd now looks red on dark gray (Myc?) [NB 84 p. iii] S IV LM III 7 LM II 4 Red 7 Black 9 Buff 40 Minyan 10 Matt 37
