Stratum:   fill N of wall 215; reddish-brown, loose soil with 30% inclusions, poorly sorted
Notes:   Basket 21 is the removal of the E and S portions of "red" soil. The soil, however, seems quite similar to fill excavated throughout the entire trench. During excavation, the E block of the well head has become better defined and seems to be a large, rectangular block. We did not find very much pottery, whereas roof tiles (large fragments, 12-15 cm long) and plaster continue to be present throughout. In scraping off the well head block, we discovered a roughly square hole on its top (at the time, approximately 10 cm. deep. A cursory look at its orientation vis a vis other features in Panaghia N seems to indicate that it is on axis with certain Hellenistic features and the large sewer drain S of wall 215. We have also scraped down the SW scarp and have determined the extent of the yellow clayey soil. In the SE corner of this basket, we came down upon a dark patch of soil, which was less red than the rest of Basket 21. Examination of the soil in this basket revealed mixed fill of both dark and red soils; thus, we stopped Basket 21 due to a soil change. While we originally thought the darker soil was an isolated pit, we also noticed dark soil around the well head; the dark soil is interspersed with the red with inclusions being equal. In Basket 21, we found glass, painted plaster, bronze, marble, bone (including some larger pieces), and a lamp fragment.
