Stratum: | Fill of pit W of Grave 2005-6 and NB 976 B2. Dark grey weakly cemented sandy silt with 20-40 % inclusions: pebbles, cobbles and rooftiles, flat, Roman
Notes: | The soil was 100 % sieved - 80 % dry, 20 % wet; dug with pick. The pit 2006-02 extended under Wall 275 (NB 969, p. 35f), therefore is pre-19th c. Inclusions have all sizes of stone (field stone), from pebble to cobble. Also 2% flat red tiles chunks. Soil is dark grey silt, and a few chunks of light green tile material surfaced. Pit 2006-02 extends from 410,80 E to 407,80 w. We are digging it from E to W removing ca. 10 cm at a time. The W end seems more shallow and may be a skin. At the N edge of pit 2006-02 pottery and bone finds increase in frequency. 10 cm. down the soil becomes less compact but with same color, same inclusions. Coin (2006-13) found from sieved soil. After excavation of the pit, there were two stones at the E end (see plan on p. 47). Small limb bones rested between these stones. Perhaps a grave extends to E outside the boundary of the pit 2006-02. There were also two other smaller pits underneath 2006-02 (see plan on p. 47). One is between 974,75-975,50 N, 408,25-408,75 E. The other is in the NW corner of the pit, but is less clear of a soil change. These will be examined further later. On scraping these areas turned out to be dirt on the bottom of the 2006-02. Bottom elevations: 1: 408,38, 975, 14, 91,78 2: 408, 55, 974,10, 91,85 3: 409,92, 975,52, 91,95 4: 409,89, 974,72, 91,67 5: 409,88, 973,82, 91,73 6: 409,76, 973,14, 91,91 Pit 2006-02, upon cleaning after excavation, has another patch of soil from 409.5E to wall 278, which may be another pit.
