Stratum:   Fill accumulated inside walls 290, 291, 294. Semi compacted reddish brown silty sand with less than 10% small round cobbles, bits of charcoal, lime.
Notes:   After some fill began emerging below basket 27 with large angular cobbles and patches of green, tan and red clay we closed basket 27 in order to clean down to this new stratum more carefully. The southwest area still looked like the former fill, so we began with the big pick here, but took a small pick near the walls in the SE area, and for the area along the north scarp. The brownish red fill peeled away over areas that had more of the clay, and some large clumps resembled mud-bricks (especially the red clay).
During excavation we found the total station had been knocked off level, so we corrected the elevations on the plan after leveling.
In the SE area a lens of loose dark fill full of angular cobbles and bricks (including one red mud-brick at least 0.27 x 0.07 m in section, measured in situ) was defined. It clearly rested on the clayey fill elsewhere, so we isolated the perimeter and cleaned over the rest of the area to get down to the clay/mud-brick rich soil. The loose debris is probably another inter-leaved lens of fill acumulated or collected in the corner, but we need to isolate it. Many coins were coming from the area to the north of the loose fill.
13-06-06. We had traced out the perimeter of the pit-like feature with debris in the SE corner, so we closed the basket to take out this feature. It was clearly on top of the clay-rich fill elsewhere.
