Stratum:   Fill. Loose reddish brown silty sand with 2% inclusions (med pebbles) and significant ash and carbon content.
Notes:   We encountered a lens of soil with high ash content SE of the hearth so we cleaned this area with this basket. At first we thought it was a pit, especially when we came on a pocket of air. But as we proceeded, more stones appeared. It now looks like this was not a pit. It is an area where stones were dumped, leaving at least one pocket of air and loose soil. Many cobbles lower down are ledged in the firmer red fill elsewhere in the area. It appears the space inside the 4 lower walls was filled up with cobbles, boulders, occasional mud bricks, tiles, and loose red earth in one operation, so loose pockets of of fill are to be expected elsewhere.
