Stratum:   Fill against east side of W 290. Soil is light whitish brown sandy clay with 30% pebbles, 20% cobbles, compact.
Notes:   B 40 is a thin pass over a layer running against the east side of W 290. We are doing this to determine soil changes and where we should excavate. After a first pass, we see no indication of a foundation trench for W 290 nor any other soil changes. Thus we are choosing to take another pass across this area.
In the second pass, Bill has noticed that the soil in the southern-most extent of the basket is much softer.
We have also come down on a large roof tile siting flat in the layer. This tile is in direct E-W alignment with tiles in W 290 but I think this is a coincidence. However, it is possible that we could be coming down on the destruction layer that was dug on the west side of this wall. Also, we have a cut to the end of this pass. Found bronze and 1 coin. See top plan pg. 69.
