Stratum:   Fill of small pit. Light yellowish brown, fine grained soft, 25-30% inclusions, fine pebbles to boulders poorly sorted. Clayey sand.
Notes:   Basket 27 was defined as a small circular like area, which was identified at the end of basket 26. The circular area was very soft and contained cobbles and pottery. The basket appears to cut into the more clay-like stratum in the west (which will be excavated in basket 30). As we continued to find some small pockets of ashy soil, we dry sieved all soil from this basket. Other inclusions found were roof tile fragments and a large, heavy ceramic waster. The fact that this basket shows a pit with fill is further evidence of the complexity and activity of the hearth area. This basket is well below the proper hearth elevation but it is not unreasonable to consider this basket as associated with hearth activity prior to the main hearth construction.
