Title:   Fill in pit in Northwest Courtyard
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1111
Context:   276
Date:   2016/07/26
Stratum:   5% small rounded pebbles. 10% small cobbles <10 cm angular.
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is moderately sorted. It is clayey sand.
Notes:   This is the top layer (arbitrarily divided) a trash-filled basin-shaped pit. The top of this context was a slightly harder-packed compact cap layer (274) that was visible inside the original pit cut (275). This was excavated separately. The fill itself is dark brown, mottled with relatively high concentrations of pottery (clearly Byzantine) and animal bone. No clear ash concentrations so no water sieve samples taken.
Soil is claye sandy silt with some pebbles.
This is the northern 3/4 of the top layer of the pit fill. The southern 1/4 excavated (at the same vertical position) is 285.
