Context:   1075

Date:   2013/04/16
Stratum:   20% inclusions; tile, ceramic sherds, fine to medium pebbles
Description:   Top slope of the context is level down to the NE. The soil color is very dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is compact. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   We opened this context to remove a layer of fill in the baulk between Cut 870 and Cut 809. We decided to concentrate in this area because the layer we were removing to the west (1073) seems, at its bottom, to run under the current context. We closed 1073 at an arbitrary level so that we could remove this context before proceeding. We hoped to be able to proceed with the excavation of the layer below 1073 after the removal of this context, but instead found that the soil below the current context runs under a further layer to the east, which in turn runs under the higher layers to the south of the area where we have been concentrating our efforts during this session. We will discuss with Guy and Rossana before proceeding further.
At the bottom of the context, we found a line of what appear to be mudbrick embedded in light greenish-white clay (similar in appearance to the mudbrick and clay in Structure 1047). This line runs NE-SW and consists of at least 4 small mudbricks. A large concentration of charcoal is embedded in the soil just south of the line of mudbricks. We have left the mudbricks and charcoal in situ and will excavate them in a different context. We closed the context upon reaching the dark yellowish-brown fill and mudbricks below.
