Title:   Reddish layer with mudbrick between C870 and C809
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1107
Context:   1079
Page:   0
Date:   2013/04/17
Stratum:   40%-ceramic sherds, tile, mudbrick, clay, carbon
Description:   Top slope of the context is level down to the SW. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is compact. The soil is very poorly sorted. It is clayey sand.
Notes:   We opened this context to remove the reddish soil with mudbrick and clay in the baulk between cuts 870 and 809. At the top of the layer we could see a line of at least 4 mudbricks surrounded by light greenish clay. The mud bricks and clay are similar to those in S1047. We removed this layer in hopes of understanding trhe stratigraphy of the baulk, which was fairly complicated in the higer levels. WE want to know ehther we have an earlier cut truncated by cuts 870 and 809 or not.
We came down on a greyish brown layer under most of the context, which had much tile in it. This layer appears to be contiguous with the soil below 1073 to the west and will be removed with it as 1080. However, in the SE corner of the context, we exposed a dark yellowish brown layer with no visible tile, which appears to be a continuation of the soil directly to the east (which may possibly be the fill of a robbing trench). We cvlosed this context at this layer.
