Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the SW. The soil color is dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is moderately sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   We are excavating this context to avoid leaving an artificial baulk and to bring the soil down to the level of the wall. By clearing this soil over and around the wall 1007, we hope to get a better understanding of the relationship between the fill to the west (and the emerging "pit" or soft soil?) and the wall. In excavation of 1088 more stones (running S) of wall 1007 were revealed in the east edge of the context. The removal of 1089 should reveal the extent of this portion of the wall.
The excavation of 1089 further defined the E limit of wall 1007, revealing a ca. .3 m gap between it and 866. The sourthern portion of 1007 (revealed in this context) uses smaller stones than the northern extent and is less strudily built. In the wall matrix are large pieces of tile and significant gaps between the faces. Additionally, the overall elevation of the wall descends the further south it goes and becomes almost completely rubble.
In final cleaining, it was shown that the "rubble" at the south is a later disturbance. The wall terminates at 1003, the southern most portion of this contex.t This is a robbing trench that cuts 1007 and 866.
