Description: | The context shape in plan is irregular. The top break of the cut is gradual. The sides of the cut are mixed. The break at the base of the cut is gradual. The base of the cut is tapered rounded point. Truncation: none.
Notes: | This cut is immediately N of Wall 945, filled with 1109 (which is under 1106-8). The cut is irregularly shaped with a sharp side on the E end and gradually sloping sides on the N and W. There is a ledge at the E bottom and the deepest point is the SW. The cut immediately abuts wall 945 on the South end. The excavation of the fill of this cut has revealed approximately 6-8 courses alternating roughly ashlar stones with a tile levelling course. On the SW side of the cut (approximately 2/3 down), a possible surface of packed clayey soil was revealed (.54). Nothing of particular noteworthiness found in the fill can help reveal the function of the cut. However, the mix of broken (mixed) pottery, large chunks of lime mortar, occasional metal and broken fragments of marble revetment suggest it is merely a refuse pit.
