Stratum:   pebbles (2-3 cm), no finds
Description:   The soil color is light greyish yellow. The soil compaction is weakly cemented. The soil is moderately sorted. It is silty sand. Structure materials: soil, highly compacted. Material bonding: lime plaster.
Notes:   This is a very compact, shallow (roughly 5 cm at most) layer of soil bound with plaster between large rocks and flat tile below (context 1157) and the surface of smaller cobbles excavated as S 1153 immediately above. The dirt was likely poured over the rocks below along with some binding lime to create a level bedding layer for cobble structure 1153. It is quite level in appearance, although elevations indicate a 10 cm slope from the southwest to the north. The soil is extremely clean with no pottery at all, one piece of faced wall plaster, and absolutely nothing else.
With some difficulty, Thanasis loosened the soil with a small hand pick. The compacted soil mostly sheered off in chunks from the rocks and plaster surface below, suggesting to us that there was indeed another surface below this one. This earlier surface (1157) turned out to be the same as the line of larger (over 10 cm long) rocks and flat tiles initially exposed by 1153 at the southwest end of the excavation area.
