Stratum:   Soil is silty sand mixed with black organic. Inclusions consist of stones, all shpaes, from fine to large peebles and cobbles. Also tiles and pottery.
Description:   Top slope of the context is uneven. The soil color is mixed. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is very poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   This archaeological cleaning for the area north of Wall 5285. The soil consists mostly of light reddish brown silty sand and black organic soil. We also turn up dark reddish brown soil. There is some large root growth in the area. Roots are being cut down. There is a concentration of large tile at the east and north part of this area. This area is itself contained by scarp to the west, an E-W wall at the north, and a N-S wall at the east. The tiles are largely in the NE corner. Among the tiles, one massive root still remains. We will have to saw it out later. The concentration of tiles appears to be it own self contained deposit. Otherwise, the sil that has been uncovered is similar to the soft soil south of Wall 5285 and may be continuous with it. Around the big roff, the organic black soil is being removed. We stop here, intending to extract a patch of loose tiles overlyng the soil and wall at the northeast.
Bot the North-South wall at 265E and the E-W Wall at 1030.50N are somewhat dodgy at this level. Stones seem to have fallen out to the west and east of the N-S wall. Also, the workmen are removing and replacing the stone of the one course of this wall visible at this time.
The slope in this area was uneven. It was higher in the NE and the SW and lower in the NW and the SE with a slight decline.
