Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light pinkish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is very poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   We are trying to see if 5355 is an exposed foundation or a baulk that was left to keep the 3 block wall (wall 64 according to NB 230, page 157). The soil underneath the 3 block wall (structure 5353) did not bind with the 5353, but the stones sat loosely on top of 5355. The removal of the humus soil directly underneath 5355 was then followed by a lighter, pinkish, brown soil. 5355 comes down on a boulder, cobble, and rooftile layer (5357).
Our next step will be to excavate the 5357 and perhaps accurately describe the pedestral-like formation that supported structure 5353. Two different hypotheses have been forwarded: 1) James Herbst believes that 5355 is a wall foundation. He points out that the boulders and roof tile contruction is not only adequate to support a wall but that this type of foundation has other examples at from this period. Alicia Carter on the other hand believes that the construction and composition of the boulders and roof tiles does not look like a foundation but rather the pedestal was created when the excavators in the 1960s left baulk that happened to contain destruction debris fill. The excavation of 5355 did not provide evidence supporting either hypothesis.
Roof tiles: 106n=29kg.
