Description:   Top slope of the context is gradual down to the W. The soil color is light greenish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   This context was noticed because it was harder and more compacted than the loose layer of dirt and stones removed as context wall 5376. Context 5391 contained roof tile and cobbles, and had some earmarks of having been dumped, in fact, if this represents the bottom part of a wall foundation, it would explain the presence of a large slab of Jurassic limestone (ca. .50 x..50 x .40m) as identified by Guy Sanders, that we removed at the end of the context. The soil beneath this layer, context 5392, is devoid of inclusions in contrast to this context but the soil composition appears similar. We appeared to be definitely below the foundations for wall 5376 after excavating 5391. Context 5392 will clarify, perhaps, the relationship between this wall (5376) and the N-S running wall (5394) directly to the east. 5376 abuts 5394. Since the rubble cobbles exposed to the east (5395) of this context (5391) appear to go in a line north to south and may represent foundation packing or the tops of an earlier wall.
* later note: added by Christina.
It is possible that this context has nothing to do with the wall 5376 above. IF the ash layer which is seen in all succeeding layers underneath is related to the ash pit uncovered after the excavation of 5398, then it would appear that this ash layer would also be a pit and dates later than this context (5391) but before the deposition of the stones of 5376. It seems unlikely that a pit would be dug into a foundation trench. This may indicate that wall 5376 was itself the lowest layer of foundation for a wall that once stood above. However we have decided to treat the two ash deposits as separate for now. See notes for 5398.
