Description: | Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light reddish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is well sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes: | Compacted soil and flat-lying sherds define this surface layer. The pottery was more copious for this deposit than previous sublayers for this wall. One question that we have as we dig this is how this layer will relate to the ash deposit to the S (5398) and the second ash pit below.. So far, one layer of ash fill has been removed (5398), but there appears to be more ash of a different consistency under it - perhaps reflecting a different period of deposition. Consequently, by excavating this red soil deposit to the N, we may be proceeding out of order. In so doing, we hope to establish whether this ash pit (under 5398) extends a bit northward and is partially covered by the current reddish layer, or whether we have a true boundary as it sits now. (see notes 5398 for interpretations of the ash pit) The surface that was revealed beneath this one was distinctly harder in texture and a light greenish brown in color. The foundation trench for wall 5395 ws revealed at the bottom of this context. We will probably proceed back to the area underlying Wall 5375 in order to see if the foundation trench continues. If it does, the context that it cuts will be important, as will the hard surface that we have exposed underneath context 5399 here.
