Description:   Top slope of the context is uneven. The soil color is mixed.
Notes:   The middle of this room was excavated in the 1960s leaving a hole over 1.0m deep and a martyr to the north and an unexcavated strip to the east. This is a cleaning layer so that we can open the area. The top layer cleaned was backfill from 2007 on top of a plastic sheet which we put down in 2007. Under that Panos cleaned a layer of erosion since the 1960s excavation and blackish humus. Under the black humus, Panos revealed a layer of hard reddish soil, where he stopped. This will be the first archaeological layer. Examination of 1961 records (NB 229, pp. 173-174 and 180) show that this hole was left by the excavation of 3 bothroi: Bothros I (latest and western most) was under the wall #36, which they partially removed to excavate this bothros (top elev. 86.074, depth 1.6m, Lot 679); Bothros II (middle) (top elev. 5.319, depth 1.5m, Lot 677); Bothros III (eastern most) (top elev. 84.764, depth 1.5m, Lot 680). Once this cleaning layer in the pit was completed we covered the revealed cuts of the 3 bothroi with nylon so we could carry the cleaning up to the martyr above and to the stretch of dirt between 5484 and 5284. Once clean we will be excavating this martyr.
Cleaning continued a third day (15/5/08). We carried this cleaning layer over and along the N side of the martyr in order to determine if the robbing trench excavated by Mr. C.K. Williams along this north side was completely excavated. If it has been we can begin excavating the martyr; if not, we have to finish that first. Our cleaning layer is being carried passed our martyr and robbing trench into Nate and Jody's (Blue team) area as their context number 5501.
