Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light greyish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   We are continuing totake down the 1960s excavation martyr. This stratum is very dry, like 5502, as it has been exposed for so long. Panos began the first pass going from west to east; the second pass was from east to west. This second pass removed stratum II downto the level of the bottom of stratum I. From here we intend to dig the rest of the martyr along wall 5519 as one context because when Panos cleaned the side of the martyr (cleaning 5523) the soil looked continuous from this level down to the bottom of the martyr. Of course, if something is revealed within this context we will change our plans. We are taking down this martyr in order to better understand the walls of the room it occupies, to get closure on this room, and to better understand its relationship with the room to the north. Furthermore, it is the wish of the director to eventually remove walls 5490 and 5485, and in order to do so the martyr must be removed. Near the west end of the martyr in the second pass Panos hit a patch of reddish soil within this context - possible melted mudbrick thrown into the fill? This second pass also revealed four stones in the middle of the martyr, and three stones at the west end. Once this stratum of martyr was removed it was revealed that what we thought was going to be a trench along wall 5483 turned out not to be, rather just a part of the next stratum of the martyr.
