Stratum: | 20% incl: many cobbles, tile frags (47 kg in 171 pieces), some small boulders, pebbles, wall plaster, some pottery, bone
Description: | Top slope of the context is uneven. The soil color is light greyish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is very poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes: | Through our observations of the scarps created by pit 5480/5486 and the pithos cut (5488 and below), we could see that underneath Floor 5528 was a hard white pebbly surface. This context was removed in order to find this floor. Presumably, we are dealing with leveling fill spread over the white floor in order to create our floor above, 5525/5528. As we continue digging in the SW corner (where Wall 5562 (Wall 58) and the N-S Wall abut), we encountered a deep level of fill (this area was higher in elevation than the rest of the area) that had many inclusions - more like 30 %, with many small boulders and large cobbles and roof tiles. The white pebbly floor appears to be completely absent here. In this area we found many stones that appear to be building material - they are flat, one with burned mudbrick attached to it, others with plaster coating. In this area as well we found a small fragment of a stone with an inscription (legible line: Further N, up against the martyr we left next to the E-W wall, we found another architectural (?) stone, measuring .25 L x .14 W x .10 H that has a rectangular hole cut into it .13 L x .08 W x .04 deep. The hard white pebbly floor was uncovered in the area directly surrounding pit 5480/5486, but is fugitive elsewhere. The area to the W came down to a layer at relatively the same elevation as the pebbly floor - this level was determined because the large inclusions of stone and tile (described above) ceased. To the E, he soil color and composition became mixed again E of the tree root. This delineation has been noted for the last few contexts in this area and our workman would like to imagine some sort of construction (now removed) that may have once been here, dividing this W and E areas. Digging to the very edge of the horseshoe shaped hole dug in the 1960s excavations, we found a very distinctive and sharp color change around the edge, from reddish brown to dark grey ash. Along the very N edge of the martyr for the E-W wall on this E edge, we found two pieces of wall plaster with black striped painted on it. The dark edge of the horsehoe hole will be dug in the next context (5541). Upon final cleaning, we found 4 distinct sections: 1) the reddish with charcoal area in the W, 2) the pebble floor around Pit 5480/5486, 3) the darker brown area in the E, and 4) a dark grey ashy layer along the scarp to the E.
