Category:   Cut
Notebook:   1101
Context:   5533
Page:   0
Date:   2008/05/19
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The context shape in plan is rectrangular. The top break of the cut is sharp. The sides of the cut are vertical. The break at the base of the cut is sharp. The base of the cut is flat. Truncation: possibly along east edge by the 1960s excavations.
Notes:   The removal of the white clayey patch of deposit 5529 revealed the north edge of this cut and the west edge. The southern edge is fromed by the E-W Wall 5519, though the eastern edge of the cut is not coterminous with the preserved extent of this wall; this excludes the possibility that cut 5533 could be a foundation trench for Wall 5519. The bottom of the cut is determined by various fragements that continue into the scarp to the west and south, though no distinct change in soil is detected between the fill of the cut and the bottom. The western edge of the cut is in alignment with what appears to be a continuation of this cut beyond the clayey scarp that forms the northern edge of the cut. The cut may represent the robbing of paving stones or perhaps a test trench from the 1960s excavation.
