Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The context shape in plan is circular. The top break of the cut is sharp. The sides of the cut are stepped. The break at the base of the cut is not perceptible. Truncation: 5595 is truncated to the west and south by a martyr left in the 1960's excavation. 5595 is also truncated in the east (1040.50N and 270.00E) by a smaller, later pit which cuts into 5595 and runs under wall 5561..
Notes:   The cut 5595 was revealed in an unorthodox manner due to martyrs left by the 1960's excavation. The martyr has an e-w orientation that starts at wall 5561 and runs west for 1.90m before turning north at 286.20 E for 2.50m where it curves to the nw and eventually changes course and heads sw at 267.40 E / 1043.60 N. This 1960's martyr can be described as a platform. On the western face of the martyr (286.20 E), the southwestern edge of cut 5595 was exposed with the removal of context 5541. The goal was to now excavate on top of the aforementioned platform to see if we could find the floor in which 5595 cut, this was accomplished by the removal of 5556. The top of the pit cut along with floor it cut where uncovered. The floors cut by 5595 are floor 5590 and floor 5591. The southern edge of the cut was revealed by the cleaning basket 5563.
5595 has at least two other pits that it cuts into. The first is an earlier, small ash pit that runs under wall 5561 (between 1041 N and 1039.90) and a larger pit visible after nearly one meter of fill (5567) had been removed. This second pit cut was defined near our pickman found what then he thought was the base of cut 5595, but it turned out to be remanants of a floor (what looks like a step about .32m wide) and an older cut that not only continued deeper but the western edge of this older cut ran under the south-facing, northern side of 5595. Excavation stopped at this point due to the fact that the smaller ash filled cut and the perhaps the large older cut found at the bottom of 5595 run under wall 5561. Thus in order to maintain our excavation methodology, we must first remove wall 5561 before excavating any further in this area.
One observation visible in the southern edge of cut 5595 approximately .56m down from the top of cut there is a boulder which may be related to the lower course or foundation of wall 5562 (the orientation of this wall course can be seen between 262.30 and 265.10). This boulders lies on the same orientation 3.40m further east. The possibility that this boulder is part of wall 5562 will have to wait for further excavation.
