Notes: | Cut 5687 is a foundation trench for wall 5442. It appears that this would have been an oval-shaped trench for the wall, but we only have one side and end of it, truncated at the north by the excavation pit for Well #2. 5687 was filled by very soft soil of 5684. 5687 cuts through the fill above the pebbly floor level (5728 that appears in patches all over the courtyard. The edge of the cut is clearly defined with a slope from east to west. It is noticed, however, that there are a few stones at a lower elevation than the bottom of the trench. These are interpreted as stones that were in situ before the digging of the trench for the construction of wall 5442, such that when they were discovered in the process of construction, they were employed as the lowest course of foundations for wall 5442. The trench cuts the pebble floor which has been detected north of the cut for well #2 and east of wall 5442. 3-6-08. After the removal of the fill deposit 5759, a westward extension of the cut for the foundation trench 5687 was revealed. The fill was similar to the fill excavated on the east side the of the wall. It appears that the fill continues further to the west under the layer that formed the bottom of the robbing trench for wall 71. The full extent of the cut will not be revealed until this layer can be removed, after the deposits west of it have been further excavated. | |
