Description: | Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light pinkish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes: | This context was defined as a soft area after the excavation of context 5598, a dumped fill. Our current interest in exploring this area is to see whether it might relate to a robbing event, perhaps for a N-S wall that may have divided this entire area from the 1960s courtyard, truncating E-W walls 5603 and 5725. The line for this soft area appears acceptable, and there have been stones discovered there with no immediately clear association. They are small in size, and sporadically placed at this point, so it is uncertain if they continue. However, their orientation appears to be N-S. Because the soft layer rom this context appears to overlie the harder, flatter layer exposed when this area was last excavated, it will help clarify that boundary, so that we can look for the cut in that area next. When we removed the soft fill, we found a regular rectangular cut that projected off of the exposed stones to the W. The underlying soil was harder and more red than the soil matrix that was removed as 5778.
