Description:   The soil color is dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   We are removing this context to get down to the next ashy layer near walls 5552 and 5403 to see if the ashy layer continues in the center of the room under 5794. We are leaving a martyr at the east end, around the bathros dug in the 1960s, because the backfill in the pit is now almost up to the level we are digging. Excavation revealed that an ashy patch we could see below was not in a floor but half of a pit. The complete boundaries of this pit have now been revealed. After the layer was completely excavated, we sprayed the soil to help define better what was revealed. The ash pit near the SW corner appears to cut the highest layer, so will be dug next. There also appears to be another pit of softer dirt in the east, cut by the bathros dug in the 1960s. The bothros goes under the martyr we just created. We can also see a little bit of hard surface with pebbles and tiles in the middle of the room.
