Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silt.
Notes:   This context was identified at the end of 5886, and was distinguished by its softness. We excavated it next because we thought it could be cutting what we had defined as the third from topmost layer of fill within the N-S robbing trench, perhaps as a foundation trench for the E-W wall spur that overlies the robbing trench cut. * However, upon excavating the context 5892, the softness appeared to be simply the result of bioturbation. We decided that the context did not actually lie within the robbing trench. Though it seemed to cross over the point where the cut ought to occur, we thought it was possible that root action caused those lines to be obscure.
* Note, post-excavation, 12.06.08:
We changed our minds later about the formation of this context. The interpretation of a foundation trench appears to be the most likely explanation for what we found upon excavating subsequent fill 5889. That context seems to be below the cut of the robbing trench, and the soft fill continues across the robbing trench boundary to the E. This means that the foundation event postdates the robbing event. It also may mean that part of the fill from 5870 may be part of the later foundation trench fill, pushing the date of the entire context further back.
