Stratum:   Soft, poorly sorted, dark reddish brown sandy sil with 40% inclusions (ceramics, fine and medium pebbles, cobbles)
Description:   The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   We are excavating a baulk to the S of foundation 5552 left as a martyr by the 1960s excavations in order to establish the chronological relationship of this baulk to the baulks on the N of foundation 5552 and the E of wall 5965, as well as to establish the chronology and phasing of the walls in the area. This deposit is the fill from foundation trench 5966 for wall 5965, c. 30cm in width, truncated by a pit from the 1960s excavation to the S. We are excavating this rather than the deposit to the W (=deposit 5972) because it cuts the later deposit. After removing 70cm of soil, Panos the pickman came to a deposit resembling the bright orange deposits to the north and south of foundation 5552 and to the east of wall 5965 at the N extremity of fill 5968, and noted that there were stones resembling the rubble foundation 5552 and a soft dark deposit laid against foundation 5552 that may be fill from a foundation trench for that foundation. A layer of ashy fill marks the bottom of the cut and seems to extend under deposit 5972 to the W.
