Description:   The soil color is light pinkish red. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   We are excavating a balk left as a martyr by the 1960s excavation in order to establish its chronological relationship to the balks on the N and S side of foundation 5552 as well as to establish the chronology and phasing of the walls in the area. The top layer of this balk is similar in color and composition to deposit 5974 on the north side of foundation 5552 and deposit 5972 on the south side of foundation 5552. Removal of deposit 5983 revealed a mixed deposit (5984, harder than 5983) with red mixed into brown soil with occasional bits of carbonized material, as in deposit 5979.
