Description:   The soil color is dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is moderately sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   We are excavating a balk to the south of foundation 5552 left by the 1960s excavation. We are attempting to establish the chronological relationship of this balk to the balks on the north side of foundation 5552 and the east of wall 5965 as well as to establish the chronology and phasing of the walls in the area. Because foundation 5985 is still being excavated by another team, we are proceding with deposit 5987 even though it may be out of sequence. Removal of deposit 5972 revealed a possible foundation trench for foundation 5552, since there seemed to be a different soil composition in the 10 cm closest to the wall (=deposit 5988). We are excavating this softer soil in order to find out whether it is truly a foundation fill or just part of a mixed deposit. Removal of deposit 5987 revealed a harder redder soil just a few (c. 10) cm below the surface that seems to be of the same composition as deposit 5972. We are therefore abandoning this context, and concluding that deposit 5987 and deposit 5988 must be contemporary.
