Description:   The context shape in plan is sub-rectangular. The top break of the cut is varies. The sides of the cut are mixed. The break at the base of the cut is sharp. The base of the cut is flat.
Notes:   The edges of this bothros were revealed when we excavated context 6258, the first/bottommost surface that appeared to be in use with wall 5631 and threshold 5671. It was filled with a great deal of tile and ceramics and had irregular edges, perhaps because of the nature of the dumped material (heavy tiles, etc.) or because we've been walking in that area a lot and it may have affected the integrity of the edges (or maybe not)? When fill 663 was removed, we noticed that 1) The tiles that lay at the bottom of the cut continued into the N-S wall 5483, meaning that we never found a northern continuation of the foundation trench for that wall; 2) The tile inclusions and soft soil continued downward and may be associated with a foundation trench for 5631 west wall section and part of threshold 5671; and 3) If that's the case, the foundation trench is cutting a patch of earlier road, distinguished by its hard consistency and pebble inclusions.
See drawing for details of bothros shape and dimensions.
Additional Note 11-05-09 SL
The "foundation trench" is too thick to have functioned as such, so the tile-rich layer should be interpreted as something else.
