Description:   The context shape in plan is circular. The top break of the cut is gradual. The sides of the cut are vertical. The break at the base of the cut is gradual. The base of the cut is flat. Truncation: truncated by later pithos cut.
Notes:   This cut was discovered following the excavation of context 6353 (stones and fill at the bottom of bothros cut). After a large collection of boulders was lifted from the bottom of the bothros, we noticed that there was a hard, regular cut into bedrock. We decided to continue excavating the fill (6358) because we wanted to try to verify the date of the wall's construction. It could be early (i.e., Roman) or late, having been dug into the bedrock. As we continued to excavate, we discovered more white ware green glazed pottery, suggesting that the wall cut held Byzantine fills and had been truncated by the construction of the later bothros above it. Therefore, the later bothros cut is a terminus ante quem for the fill of the well.
The well cut itself is unusual because 1) It's unusually large in diameter and 2) it's not very deep; it only continues for approximately 1.3 m D. before stopping. Parallels from north of Nezi suggest that it was possible for somebody to start excavating a well into bedrock and then abandon the endeavor; if this occurred, the well would probaly not have been lined, which would explain why the size appears so large.
