Description:   The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is well sorted. It is silty sand.
Notes:   The excavation of context 6417 revealed at least three new contexts- one large area of fill toward the east and two possible foundation trenches abutting the wall. 6425 is the northernmost of the two possible foundation trenches. The two are differentiated by their compaction - the fill to the north is softer. Last year on the opposite (west) side of this wall (5284), a foundation trench (5471) was found at the same elevation as our possible foundation trench (84.58 last year's on west side; 84.59 ours on east side). This supports our identification of this context as a foundation trench.
Foundation trench 5471 ran the whole length of the wall, and foundation trench 6425 also runs the length of the wall. This may be because there was some kind of repair to the wall, or two different foundation events, with this event being the latter one- but as of yet it is unclear.
Another possibility of why the northernmost foundation trench fill may be softer is because this part of the foundation trench may overlap with the foundation trench for east-west running wall 5519.
As Panos has continued down, the lower part of the wall has been exposed, which seems to jut out a bit-- earlier phase? Or foundation course?
POST-EXCAVATION NOTE, 15-06-09, S.L.: Contexts 6663 and 6649, at least one of which underlies this context, were found to contain two joining coarse incised ware body fragments of the Frankish period, dating to the mid-13th century. These sherds will stratigraphically change the dates of every context that lies above them by as much as two centuries, of which this context is one. Until it is decided whether there is some other reason that this discrepancy might have occurred (e.g., these contexts need to be situated in a different place on the Harris Matrix), the dates will remain as they have been assigned on the basis of pottery/stratigraphy prior to discovering this discrepancy.
