Notes:   Wall 6426 runs eastward from Wall 6421; it lies to the north of 'pier foundation' pit 6065.
14-4-10 addendum (MW and RN): We are removing 6426 today as part of our push to get down to the early levels of the house. Wall 6426 is a late wall, as evidenced by the fact that it is floating on the north side. The south face is not exposed yet--there is a small strip of soil that was left unexcavated here. This was only noticed after the wall had been mostly removed. We will carefully remove the stones of the wall, then take the strip of soil after as a separate context.
The wall had only two courses; the bottom course consisted of larger limestone blocks c. 30-50cm and roughly square. The top course also had limestone blocks, less well-worked, and there were some flat-laying tiles between but not enough to qualify as a string course--simply he standard construction technique for late Byzantine and Frankish walls.
Wall 6426 has no discernable relations with contexts to the north, east and south. In the east and south, the fills reach the wall (i.e. were deposited against it). On the north, the relations with the fill here will have to be reestablished, if possible, from the excavation notes of the 1960s. To the west, wall 6426 abuts wall 6421. It seems that wall 6426 used to be a much larger wall continuing to the east, and when the pithos/bothros was put in (excavated in the 1960s), this act necessitated the removal of the eastern half of the wall. A very small strip of fill inside this robbing trench (context 6724) is excavated as 6725. We can see a continuation of the wall in the arrangement of walls to the east. Here, the wall is preserved at a higher level, but it is floating at what appears to be the same level as the part that was removed. We will not remove this portion at present.
We have taken two photos: two from S, one from N.
