Stratum: | 70% cobbles (angular, subrounded/spherical, platy, tabular; 0.04-0.16), pebbles, tiles
Description: | Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light brownish grey. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is very poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes: | 6598 was a roughly circular shaped fill measuring about 0.47 x 0.42 m. It was uncovered after excavating pebble surface 6593. It seemed very clear that the context 6598 cut through a levelling fill since it was composed of medium-sized jumbled cobbles, whereas the surface surrounding it had flat-lying sherds, tiles, and pebbly-stone matrices. We excavated the context for about 0.13 m and came down to a level of darker soil (6605). This lower darker soil, however, was also filled with rocks (cobbles) which may continue under the surrounding surface. It is unclear at this stage if the rocks distured the floor (which seems most likely given the stratigraphy) or if it is somehow related to the lower layer. Excavation of the surrounding surfaces should make that more clear (see drawings for 6597 and 6601). NB. Further excavation of a leveling fill (6605) to the north, east and south of this context suggests that 6598 was part of the larger tile/rock dump underneath the floors.
