Stratum:   15% inclusions: tile, pottery, organic material, and some lenses of charcoal; semi-compact soil (more compact than 6703, the context directly above)
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light reddish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is coarse sand.
Notes:   Context 6705 is a somewhat-compact level of abandonment/fill directly above the marble tile floor. It is distinct from fill 6703 above it by being slightly more compact and by having pottery and tiles distributed horizontally on its surface. We decided to excavate it as a context distinct from 6703 for these reasons. Our working hypothesis is that 6705 represents the first stage of abandonment above the marble tile floor.
The soil is reddish brown and has lots of material within it (15%) including tile, pottery, bone, glass, metal, fragments of the marble floor, some small charcoal lenses, and some small rocks (avg. ca. 6-10 cm.). Underneath 6705, we have uncovered more of the marble floor along the North-South wall 5677 and returning partially to the East. The marble floor is composed of white marble and blue schist tiles, arranged in an opus sectile quadriform pattern and in a lozange pattern. In a few places the tiles are missing, but we have found the concrete subfloor. We have also found traces of cement along the base of wall 5677, where the marble floor meets it. We were unable to find the marble floor along wall 5562 or in the Eastern area of 6705; either the floor has been robbed out or it does not continue to the East. We will change contexts in order to trace the concrete subfloor and determine the extent of the room.
