Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark greyish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silt.
Notes:   780 lies immediately to the south of pit 430 and to the west of 770. Both it and 779 appear to fill shallow depressions in the red material that could date to the late roman period, and were exposed at least partially through the removal of the circular structure 539. It was excavated on both 7.5.2012 and 8.5.2012. There is a large presence of tiles. A large amount of pottery was removed from this context, despite it being fairly shallow.
25 May 2012: 780 is a peanut-shaped context which dates to the late 11th to early 12th c. In the matrix, we have considered it to be overlaid by 778, which extended further to the west than 779. It was laid on 788, which also dated to the late 11th to early 12th c. Many of the other fills in this area could not be dated more precisely than to the 11th c. npd, but based on the pottery in 780 and the contexts which were laid on it (778/779 and 773/801), we can give a late 11th c. terminus post quem to the construction of the "apse" (538 and 539) removed as context 773. - RM
