Stratum: | almost no inclusions-- some smallish rocks
Description: | Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is well sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes: | We originally thought that 317 had the same soil as 313 and 314, but with fewer rocks than the latter and more than the former. We believe that all 3 represented a single-event deposit, and explained the difference in inclusions by water washing. However, upon excavating 317, we quickly saw that the soil was much redder and softer than 313 and 314. Thanassis and Costas explained that 317 was probably the same as the red soil into which the 2 bothroi under 315 had been cut. Because of this we closed the context and now plan to excavate those two bothroi on Monday 4/11. This deposit had almost nothing inside it and the soil was very fine and soft. Panos suggested that it may be Broneers post-sieving spoil heap. End of day: The Western half of the trench, so far unexcavated since initial cleaning, is mostly covered by a layer of redeposited bedrock.
