Lot:   Lot 2015-086
Stratum:   5% small-medium pebbles, 5% tile and pottery, 2% chunks of yellow compacted clay, few small flecks of carbon
Description:   Top slope of the context is even. The soil color is light yellowish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey sand.
Notes:   Same soil as 78 but fewer tiles.
This context was begun arbitrarily after 25 cm was excavated in context 68. The soil contains slightly more yellow clay than the last few contexts but the inclusions seem to be mostly the same - bone and shell. Like 68, it contains considerably more pottery than the contexts in the upper two moeters of the well. There is also much less tile and many more snail shells. The soil is getting damper as we end this context after excavating 25 cm. (By the end/bottom of the context, there were fewer land snail shells in the soil but otherwise it was consistent - May 21) We also found some decayed mudbrick pieces in it.
N.B. Marios has said that most of the snail shells came from the edges of the well. He thinks therefore that they may have come down on their own, attracted to the water, but that seems unlikely, to me.
Tiles (pan and cover): 4=2.0 kg
