Corinth Basket: Temple E, Southeast, context 103
Collection:   Corinth
Type:   Basket
Name:   Temple E, Southeast, context 103
Area:   Temple E, Southeast
Context Type:   Deposit
Title:   Fourth clay surface east side fourth from top
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1108
Context:   103
Date:   2014/04/21
Stratum:   10% ceramics (pottery), cobbles, tile.
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light greyish grey. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty clay.
Notes:   The clay surface of this currect deposit was revealed in the removal of context 82 (third surface). The surface of this context is the eastern side of a single surface truncated in the middle by cut 104. The other section of the surface will be excavated separtely as "west side of surface"to be cautious. The two have the same appearance and elevation, and are likely related. The east side of the surface is further truncated by cut 97. Like the surfaces above, this surface consists of a light gray clay of semi-firm compaction with few inclusions. A few stones of what appears to be a wall below (revealed in 101) poke out of the surface which is otherwise clean. Removal of the surface on the southern extent of the basket reveals more of the possible wall uncovered in 101. On the northern extent, we come down on a darker, siltier layer of soil and more of the stones from the rubbles nearby to thes west. Just below the siltier layer we reveal a layer of very fine pale yellow clay. It is possibly a layer of melty run-off from the superstructure. It's also possible that the clay surfaces of 103 and 106 were part of this melt that had been trodden flat by frequent traffic.
Later note: At the bottom of this context, we revealed a few stones that turned out to belong to a rectangular feature abutting both structures 110 and 135. This rectangular feature is structure 189. The rubble and clay melt around this context hindered recognition of this feature until their later removal in 118 and 132.
