Corinth Basket: Temple E, Southeast, context 1078
Collection:   Corinth
Type:   Basket
Name:   Temple E, Southeast, context 1078
Area:   Temple E, Southeast
Title:   Pit cut, NE corner of courtyard, unit 1
Notebook:   1112
Context:   1078
Date:   2017/5/2
Description:   The context shape in plan is sub-rectangular. The top break of the cut is sharp. The sides of the cut are concave.
Notes:   After cleaning and scraping floor surface surrounding south and west edges of 1078, it seems like that 1078 is a pit that cut through at least one earlier floor (though there may be more, based on the stratigraphy visible in the west scarp of the unit). Once the first deposit of the pit (1076) was removed, it was decided that the rest of the floor surface of the unpaved courtyard needs to be further excavated before continuing to excavate the deposits within 1078. There are numerous floor levels/stratigraphic layers visible in the pit wall. 1078 cuts through small portions of 1079 and 1081, in southern portion of pit. 1085 wraps almost entirely around pit. East side of pit cut contaminated by modern wall reconstruction. After the removal of floor 1085 from unit 1, the pit shape and dimensions became much clearer, and new measurements were taken.
The bottom elevation is an artificial truncation. Pit not entirely excavated and the bottom elevation of the pit is unknown, as the work in this area was finished once it became clear the rock "wall" in east wall was a wall foundation support (see 1089,1092, 1093 for discussion).
