Type:   Basket
Name:   Temple E, Southeast, context 141
Area:   Temple E, Southeast
Context Type:   Deposit
Title:   General fill north of Room E
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1108
Context:   141
Date:   2014/04/25
Stratum:   4% pottery, coarse pebbles, bone, shell.
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the E. The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is silty clay.
Notes:   We begin excavation of context 141 as a continuation of the layers north of Room E begun by Colin Whiting. Whiule removing the clay above structure 135 in deposit 131, we noticed that the soil underneath them ran under the layers left by Coln Whiting east of the structure and this new soil underneath has inclusions of cobbles and tile consistent with that of a rubble layer. We associate this rubble layer now with destruction of strcuture 135 but need to remove the current layer and the red sterile lay which lie on top of the rubble first. The current deposit is a thin layer of grayish brown silty clay on top of the red sterile layer below. The soil is soft with inclusions of pebble and tile, and very clumpy. The surface is uneven with the occassional cobble poking out. After removing this layer we expect to then remove the red sterile fill below. We hope to then come to the rubble layer visible in the scarp of this baulk in order to investigate any association it has with the rubble layer visible near structure 135 after excavation of 131. We're sieving this 100% and possibly also the red layer below in the hopes of getting as much datable material as possible to provide an ante quem date for the rubble layer. As expected, the layer was thin and after only a few centimeters of excavtion we reveal the soft, red layer below. This general fill was likiely deposited as one of several layers of leveling fill for the road above. The rubble layer below slopes heavily from east to west and so the area would need to be levelled extensively.
