Title:   Fill, chunky lens east of wall, Unit 2, Room 7
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1108
Context:   199
Date:   2014/05/06
Stratum:   About 50%, mostly tile and stone, with some glass, ceramic, and coins.
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light reddish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   A chunky lens of fill abutting the robbed-out portion of wall context 59 overlay the remaining layers of fill in room 7, and needed to be removed prior to excavating the rest of the room. Upon excavation it was found to be comprised of about 50% inclusions, mainly large roof tiles and stones, with several sherds of glazed ceramic, a bag of glass, and 2 coins fused together and lying in situ with a round ceramic jeton inside a small glazed ceramic lamp base. The deposit was small, with dimensions of around 60cm x 70cm, and shallow, around 7cm deep. The presence of the in situ lamp base and its contents throw into question the original interpretation of the deposit, which hypothesized that the fill was part of a series of small-scale dumping events on a working surface. Perhaps the lamp and its contents were already on the surface at the time of the dump.
