Corinth Basket: Temple E, Southeast, context 277
Collection:   Corinth
Type:   Basket
Name:   Temple E, Southeast, context 277
Area:   Temple E, Southeast
Title:   Debris/fill N room F, Unit 2
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1108
Context:   277
Date:   2014/05/13;2014/05/14
Stratum:   Inclusions of tiles, rounded and sub-rounded pebbles, pottery, and some bone (approximately 10%)
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light brownish grey. The soil compaction is firm. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   During removal of the clayey general dump fill of context 272 we noticed that there were several tiles lying on a clayey surface around N1078.50 E109.75, very similar in appearance to the fallen tiles on clay surface we uncovered at N1075.35 E106.90. We begin a new context (277) to reveal this tile/clay relationship further. We excavate this context using small picks and progressing carefully to the W. We take care to leave the tiles and stones in place as much as possible in order to get a clear picture of the extent and character of this destruction.
There are now three separate points in the area that preserve tile fall that appear to belong to the same event: 1) N1075.40 E107.00 H86.04; 2) N1077.08 E108.61 H86.05; and 3) N1075.97 E111.86 H85.91. We hope the connection of these three areas will help clarify the relationship of the staircase, wall next to it, and platform structure.
Some pottery, bone, and glass were removed in this context.
This context is one of a series of clayey soil deposits found above and on either side of the preserved top of this wall (wall 110). It is possible that we are excavating the nerk, or melted clay coatings of this wall. We are considering this explanation for the clayey deposits of context 286 and 292 as well. Notes added 21/5/14, K.E.L.
