Corinth Basket: Temple E, Southeast, context 286

Type:   Basket
Name:   Temple E, Southeast, context 286
Area:   Temple E, Southeast
Title:   Clayey deposit N room F, Unit 2
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1108
Context:   286
Date:   2014/05/14
Stratum:   Inclusions of tiles, sub-rounded coarse pebbles, and pottery (approximately 7%)
Description:   Top slope of the context is level. The soil color is light greyish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is poorly sorted. It is clayey silt.
Notes:   We continue to remove the clayey depoist directly above the tile fall S of the wall. We work with small picks moving W to expose the tile fall and stone debris underneath the clayey deposit. By examining the scarp to the S from previous excavations we are able to see that the tile fall continues underneath this clayey layer. We close this context when we encounter a harder packed area of the clay depoist at E110.05.
Some pottery, bone, and iron was collected in this context.
This context is one of a series of clayey soil deposits found above and on either side of this wall (wall 110). It is possible that we are excavating the nerk, or melted clay coatings of this wall. We are considering this explanation for the clayey deposits of context 277 and 292 as well. Notes added 21/5/14, K.E.L.
