Corinth Basket: Temple E, Southeast, context 289
Collection:   Corinth
Type:   Basket
Name:   Temple E, Southeast, context 289
Area:   Temple E, Southeast
Title:   Rocky deposit N of wall
Category:   Deposit
Notebook:   1108
Context:   289
Date:   2014/05/15
Stratum:   Inclusions of tiles, coarse pebbles and cobbles, and pottery (approximately 10%)
Description:   Top slope of the context is slight down to the N. The soil color is dark yellowish brown. The soil compaction is soft. The soil is very poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   We notice that the area W of the N-S cut just identified at approximately E108.0 is characterized by rocky, chunky brown soil. We begin to remove this deposit as context 289. It has lots of inclusions of stones and tiles mixed in soft, brown soil. It appears that patches of both soft black and red soils run underneath this layer. The brown fill abuts the N-S cut described and exposed during the removal of context 288, the clayey deposit. We are having trouble identifying this type of cut. It could be a scarp from a previous excavation, but the wavy-ness of the cut speaks against this identification, even though the mixture of soil deposits up against the cut is reminiscent of backfill. We remove much of the chunky brown fill but the leave the confusting cut and mixed deposit situation temporarily.
Some pottery, bone, glass and iron were collected in this context. A coin (2014-118) was found in the dry sieve.
