Title:   Cut for Soft Pit with tiles North of Unit 2 Room F
Notebook:   1108
Context:   40
Date:   2014/04/10
Description:   The context shape in plan is sub-rectangular. The top break of the cut is sharp. The sides of the cut are vertical. The break at the base of the cut is gradual. The base of the cut is flat. Truncation: truncated by earlier excavations south of it. See NB 869 b32 or 38..
Notes:   The cutting was formed by deposit 39. It was excavated in the process of removing the fill, so that excavation of the white clay soil (deposit 43) into which the cut was made could continue. The lower surface of the pit was uneven - the eastern side was defined by clay, as opposed to the loose dirt of the deposit. The western side was defined by red compact dirt, and cobbles and small boulders. The deposit ran up to the edge of the southern scarp with the exception of 0.41m of baulk that remained on the SE side. Part of the deposit and cut were likely lost in an earlier excavation (perhaps B. 32 of NB 869).
