Stratum:   Few (~10%), 2 large boulders of worked marble (1 column drum, other fragmentary and not identifiable), shell, bone, ceramic, tile, spherical to platy and angular to subangular pebbles, a few rounded
Description:   The soil color is dark reddish brown. The soil compaction is loose. The soil is poorly sorted. It is sandy silt.
Notes:   In order to better see and record the well structure, a few stones (very large stones) needed to be removed, which were only roughly associated with the underlying structure as they were bedded in sediment and not directly sbutting the courses of the well. One of these was a Roman (?) column base, the other a large fragment of worked marble. It is also possible that another boulder, a roughly worked rectangular block, is also bedded on sedinemt rather than part of the well itself, but this large stone extende under the unexcavated surface to the south of the well and is very firmly implanted, so was not taken at this time.
Very little material was found in the sediment under these stones, and what there is was fragmentary at best. It may be possible to assign a date to the original use of the column base, as dependent on its architectural type, but this will be unlikely to date the well or when the well went out of use, as it is likely its reuse is not contemporary with the building from which it was taken. These stones association with the well is unclear at this time, since they are aligned with the courses underlying them, but not directly coursed into the well construction. They may represent an attempt to close off/seal the well, or a fallen attempt at reconstruction.
