Name: | Temple A | |
Description: | Temple A is a Classical and Hellenistic structure which lay partly under the shops along the east side of the Lechaion Road and partly under the Peribolos of Apollo. Preserved are the foundations of a small distyle in antis fourth century temple which was converted in the third century into an aedicula. The latter is a baldechino consisting of four square pillars which supported a pitched roof. The two western pillars were joined by a wall. The monument probably housed the image of a god or hero. A pebble mosaic leads from the aedicule to a semicircular altar. The altar was also covered by a baldechino which indicates that the sacrifices made on it were not intended for Olympian deity but rather they were offered to a chthonic deity or to a hero. | |
